Bill Young began his career while in high school in Lufkin, Texas, working nights at KTRE AM/TV. He attended Baylor and worked as the evening DJ at WACO. It was in Waco later that he became the station’s Program Director and discovered a real passion for "creative production".
Bill left Texas briefly for a stint as morning man at Star Station’s KOIL in Omaha. With a son on the way and lonely for his home state, he returned to program KDOK in Tyler, building the small daytimer into a nationally recognized "school" for such personalities as Steve Lundy, Jimmy Rabbitt, Randy Robins and others. In early ‘66 he was hired as the head of programming at Gordon McLendon’s KILT AM/FM in Houston where he served for 15 years!
Joining the station in the midst of the famous KILT/KNUZ battles, he quickly organized a talented staff that led the station to a decade and a half of continued dominance in local ratings and repeated national recognition. Bill was, and is still a fan of great talent, so he assembled an all-star staff that eventually included Chuck Dunaway, Barry Kaye, Steve Lundy, Russ "The Weird Beard" Knight, Jon Rivers, John Young, Beau Weaver, Jim Wood, KO Bailey, Todd Wallace, and others. He developed the morning show concept, “Hudson & Harrigan” that has dominated Houston ratings for over three decades!
After leaving KILT, he founded Bill Young Productions in 1981 and led its growth to the leading Radio, TV and Print Production House in the nation, producing over 50,000 completed commercials a year! Bill sold the majority of his company to his employees in ‘96 but still serves on the Board of Directors and as VO/ Producer and Film Director.
Bill's early training under media pioneers Gordon McLendon, Don Keyes and Bill Stewart taught him the art of the "theater of the mind". This "visuality" allowed an easy transition into Film and TV Production. He directed over 100 music videos, including George Strait, Clay Walker, Clint Black, Billy Dean, Wynonna Judd and many others…commercials for Chevy Trucks, Wrangler, Exxon, Numerous Broadway shows, and also headed the team that handled all advertising for Randalls/Tom Thumb Supermarkets until Safeway’s consolidation in mid 2001
He has appeared as the voiceover for CBS Sports, Miller Lite, Fruit of the Loom, Purina, Paul McCartney World Tour, Budweiser, NBC-TV and was the weekly voice of ABC TV's "In Concert" for 2 years! Bill and his partner, Olympic Champion Mary Lou Retton, are Co-Producers of "Mary Lou’s Flip Flop Shop", a children’s TV series airing nationally on PBS.
