Comments from
those who attended the 2003 Induction Celebration in Houston |
What
a grand evening to be among those again who provided
me the passage to begin my broadcasting career in
TEXAS! An absolute thrill. Dan
Lovett
Let
me express my appreciation and gratitude for all
that you and the Council of Advisors and others did
to make the 2nd Hall of Fame banquet such a
memorable evening. It was so heartwarming to
see old friends, like Chuck Dunaway (my p.d. at
K98), and Jack Murray (my p.d. and on-air partner at
KXOL), Rusty Reynolds, Al Caldwell, Ed Brandon, and
Jay Allen, and to see and hear other true
legends of the golden days of Top 40 radio!!
It reminded me of all the excitement of listening to
radio when I was a teenager in San Antonio in the
late 50s and early 60s, and that "star
quality" that people like Howard Edwards, Bruce
Hathaway, Ricci Ware, Herb Carl, Woody Roberts, Lee
"Baby" Sims, and others had and made me
want. It reminded me of why I went into radio
in the first place and stayed for nearly 40 years.
It reminded me of all the fun things about
radio--the creativity (mostly missing now) and the
theatre of the mind. I'm thrilled to have
been instated in the Hall of Honor in the first
year of its existence, and humbled to be in the
presence of so many radio luminaries. Dave
Jarrott
It was
such an honor to present my best friend Barry Kaye
with his Hall of Fame honors! What a great event, and
to be in the same room with the folks that made Texas
radio the legendary entity it is was overwhelming. A
special thank you to Bill Young and Chuck Dunaway for
the great job in organizing this event. I will see all
of you next year, and congratulations to the winners.
Well deserved by all! CC McCartney
After
reading the comments, it appears everyone was in the
same event. It was great. We all came
along at a great time. All of you were part of
the re-birth of radio. It truly was a night to
remember. My best wishes to Larry, Bill and
Chuck and others for a great evening. Jim Phillips
What a SPECIAL
evening !!! To be in the presence of the TEXAS radio legends
this past Saturday in Houston was nothing less than a
LIFETIME event. I was able to chat with some folks I hadn't
seen in over 30 years. And, some I have heard of, but never
had the chance to meet until this past weekend. I am very
much looking forward to next year. I am so proud to have
been a small part in this year's event. Jay West
I
wish to take this opportunity to thank the Council of Advisors
of The Texas Radio Hall of Fame for my naming to the 2003 Hall
of Honor. Humbled I truly am by your acknowledgement. I
owe much to many who have over the years afforded me the
opportunity to participate in the industry I have loved since
my early childhood. I hope next year I will be able
to join in this fellowship and personally express my heartfelt
thanks. May God bless all of you. Bruce Miller Earle
What a great
night, indeed! Most heartwarming was the level of
professionalism represented by the truly great pioneers of
our industry. Their commitment to excellence paved the
way for many of us who grew up listening to their vision of
the medium. They make me proud to call myself a Broadcaster.
May
we face the future with all the wonder and enthusiasm we had
when we worked for minimum wage and loved it. Whether
by Internet, satellite, or airwaves, our beloved Radio
will always be the most personal and magical way to touch
human beings. Touch
on. Sonny
Melendrez - KLUP
San Antonio
PS: As the
Official Ambassador Of Good Will for the City of San
Antonio, I hereby invite the Texas Radio Hall Of Fame to
experience the Birthplace of Hospitality.
Bienvenidos a San Antonio en 2004! Los eperamos!!I
I can't
tell what this weekend meant to me ... It was a blast seeing
all those old guys that I use to work with ... I just wanted
you to know I had a great time as did my wife, Beth ...
Thanks for the invitation ... It was fun ... Jack
Auldridge
Thanks,
from the bottom of my heart for the great ego rush and
entertainment. The recognition was well overdue for guys
like (Don) Keyes and Sonny (Melendrez). If I can ever
help to pay it back (or pay it forward), just let me know.
John Barger
It
was truly enjoyable and an obvious example of how excellence
can be attained through careful and creative preparation.
Can't imagine how you all will "top" it next
year....but I'll bet you will. Dan (Patrick) McCurdy
An absolutely
wonderful, astonishing, incredible, marvelous program in
Houston. You guys outdid yourselves, with special thanks
to Kendall, Sharon, and of course Steve, too. A lot of
work, and I very much appreciate all you did. Ken Dowe
...
What an incredible evening and a truly magical time shared
with so many great friends. I'll be sending some pix shortly.
Once again, thanks for one of greatest highlights on my career
as an official member of the Texas Radio Hall Of Fame.

"It is my great pleasure to be inducted into
such a distinguished roll call of Texas broadcasters. Two
of the greatest things anyone can be is a Texan and a radio guy.
I am enormously proud to be both of those things, and
that pride is boosted even further by this honor. I wish I
could have been there in person, but I want all of you to know
how proud I am to be one of you, how proud I am of our
profession and how proud I am of our state, which has produced
so many great talents. Thanks to Larry Shannon for being the
pilot of this whole project, thanks to all of you who voted, and
congratulations to all the other inductees. I could not be
happier to join you in this very special group. Mark Davis
(WBAP)
... caught up with your sleep yet??? Just
wanted to tell you what a production you had for us in Houston
last Saturday evening. I was overwhelmed with the show. What a
production. So much fun visiting old jocks, young jocks, more
jocks, old buddies, has
been jocks
.it was a fun night. Sorry I didnt get to visit
with you. At that time however I couldnt tell you my name
anyway. Bill, Josh, Round Mound of Sound, etc. really added a
lot. Rusty Reynolds
"
... During my broadcasting career, which started in September
1958, I had the opportunity to work upon four occasions in the
great state of Texas. I have always believed the finest
radio work in the world has been, and is being, done in the Lone
Star State and I cherish my time spent working in the shadows of
some of the most important and innovative broadcasters ever in
the business. I am thrilled to be recognized and accepted
by the members of "The Hall" as having contributed in
some way to the industry we have all served and loved." Jack
Woods (Charlie Brown)
"I'm honored... how great is that... Thank you so much for
your efforts over the past months... I will cherish the
time I spent in Houston over the weekend" Paul Menard (Irving Harrigan)
"What a thrill!!" Jim Carola (KILT)
