Jerry Thomas

Jerry Thomas was born in Fort Worth but he spent years in Sacramento, California before returning to Fort Worth where he graduated from the historic I.M. Terrell High School.  A talent for singing led him to New Orleans where, in the summer, he established himself as an outstanding lead tenor solist and traveled with the "Elegant Wings over Jordan" Choir after graduating from Dillard University.

Jerry's first job as a DJ was at KWBC radio in Fort Worth which later became the legendary KNOK.  He was named by station president Stuart J. Hepburn to be the Program Director for both KNOK AM and FM.  Jerry believed in and practiced community involvement, with activities including Saturday social events for teenagers at a recreation center.  He was co-founder of La Vida News, the first black president of the Fort Worth Catholic Schools Diocesend and one of the five founders of the Sojourner Truth Theatre Center.

Jerry's talents took him to television for many years. He was a news anchor at KTVT Channel 11 and host of the TV show, "What About People", sponsored by the Mayor's Youth Council.

Jerry Thomas was a member of the National Association of Radio and TV Announcers, and an Outstanding Person of the 20th Century.  He received an Oscar for his work with the United Negro College Fund in their fundraising campaign. He's presently a member of Omega PSI PHI Fraternity, a member and past president of the Fort Worth Ambassadors, a substitute teacher for the Fort Worth Independent School District and a senior editor for LaVida News - the Black Voice.
