Sammy Allred
Sammy Allred said that he got into
radio by accident. A member of the entertainment group, the
Geezinslaw Brothers, Sammy said that he was at The Horseshoe, a
South Austin beer joint, when someone said that KVET wanted to hire
Arlie Duff, the writer of the song, "Y'all Come". Arlie said he'd do
it for a hundred grand and a Rolls Royce. Well, Sammy spoke up and
jokingly said he'd do it for a hundred grand and a Lincoln, knowing
that Roy Butler, who owned KVET, also owned the Lincoln auto
dealership. Then, he started getting phone calls from KVET
Sammy has worked in radio off and on for 40 years and has won a lot of awards through those years including the Country Music Association Personality of the Year Award in 2006 and 2007, the Billboard Personality of the Year Award in 1971 and 1997. During his 40 years on the radio, he says that he's only been fired twice. Ironically, another Texas Radio Hall of Famer, Ron Rogers, fired him and then hired him back. Sammy's been a radio personality at KVET with Bob Cole, KTXZ along with Fred Cantu (Can-too), John Smith and Rocket Bob Moore; and at KOKE as well as at KASE in Austin. Sammy Allred says that of all the awards he's won, the ones that meant the most were the ones from the Children's Hospital and Blue Santa and to all the people who make kids happy |
